When we tell people we’re going to drive from one coast to the other and live in our van for 3 months, the first question is usually “Why?”. Well, we’re going to California so that Gregor can attend the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco this June. Then we want to visit our dear friends, Ted and Cheryl, and our extended family in St. John’s, Newfoundland: Janice, Mel, and Alex.
When people hear about our trip, we get mixed reactions…
Some people show genuine support and happiness:
“Oh, how interesting! Sounds like an exciting adventure! You guys are so fortunate to be able to do that.”
Others respond with skepticism:
“Oh, how…interesting. Sounds like a long drive. Won’t you guys hate each other by the end of it?”
And then there’s the envy:
“Oh…how interesting. Sounds like a “nice” trip. I’m trapped in a cubicle this summer…I hate you guys.”
I’m sure that we’ll have many moments of happiness on our trip, but we’re bound to experience doubt, discomfort, and, yes, even envy – wishing that we had the comforts of home. You’ll find out on this blog.
What a great adventure. My wife & I took a 10 month/24,000 mile ride in our Westy in 1996-97 and still speak fondly of it. Keeping a journal or blog is a must (our written log ran to 6 volumes) as it is the little unexpected things that become the most memorable.
I hope we registered in the support and happiness category 🙂
It’s going to be a great trip.
That’s cause you’re in the burbs Mel.
G & J what an adventure! All the dear and stellar people of St. John’s will welcome you.
Oh, we’re only extended family…no dear friends in our part of the city hey? The trip sounds epic.
Note from the Editor: “and our extended family in St. John’s” should be replaced with: “and our *stellar* extended family in St. John’s” 😉
I hate you guys.
You’re the best, man.
I love that you’ll be blogging about your adventures, and I love that you’re coming all the way to Newfoundland to visit us!! Happy Travels!
Holy smokes, our first blog comment! Looking forward to it! BTW Janice, I’m glad you thought of adding the “S.” to your name because it would have looked like I was having a lame conversation with myself.
