“Camping” at Tunnel Mountain

Our first overnight trip in the van this year! I’d like to say that we “camped” last Saturday, but I don’t think that getting anย electrical site among the monster RVs parked atย Tunnel Mountain campground in Banff really qualifies as camping. Truth be told, I was being a bit of a princess – Iย wanted to plug in our ceramic heater so that I wouldn’t freeze my derriere at near-zeroย temperatures.

We arrived at the campground about 6:30 pm and proceeded to level the van on the site (yes, I’m the stereotypical passenger wife that jumps out of the vehicle and yells at her driver husband as he narrowly misses trees, rocks, picnic tables, and squirrels while manoeuvring the vehicle into level perfection).

Once parked, we immediately executed our camp routine:

Gregor sets up the pop-top tent on the van.
I pull out the firewood and food tote.
Gregor chops wood.
I open a bottle of red wine using the corkscrew from my Swiss Army knife.
Gregor lights the fire.
I set up our cheap Canadian Tire camp chairs.
Gregor curses that the fire isn’t lighting.
I pour the wine.
Gregor curses the excessive smoke from the fire.
I start making dinner.
Gregor says triumphantly: “Look, wife, I’ve made you a fire.”
And then we enjoy the fire together with food and wine.

Gregor BBQ’d these absolutely massive portobello mushrooms over the fire – you can see them in the photo. Very tasty.

We spent a cozy night with the heater in the van. What’s great about waking up at the RV park at Tunnel Mountain is the view of Mt. Rundle.
